 This will be the first interleague series for both the Pirates and Tigers. Pittsburgh's 15-5 record in interleague play last season ranked second in MLB (Red Sox, 16-4), while Detroit's 6-14 interleague record tied for worst in baseball.

 Since starting 7-3, the Tigers have gone 1-4 and lost series to the Indians and Twins. Their 2.67 runs per game and seven home runs this season both rank last in MLB.

 The Pirates' pitching staff leads MLB with a .197 BAA, and their 2.69 ERA ranks second behind the Rays (2.44). However, the staff has blown five save opportunities, second most in MLB (Royals, six).

 Through six games, Josh Bell was 4-for-21 (.190) with no extra-base hits, two runs and four RBI. He has since slashed .400/.471/.933 with nine extra-base hits, seven runs, and eight RBI in his last eight games.

 Matthew Boyd's 55.6 whiff percentage on his sliders this season leads MLB (minimum 100 thrown). Pittsburgh's Chris Archer ranks second, with a 55.0 slider whiff percentage. Boyd is 0-2 with a 10.57 ERA and .421 BAA against the Pirates in his career.

 Niko Goodrum has hit safely in six of his last seven games after doing so in two of his first six games. Goodrum is seeing 4.62 pitches per plate appearance this season, fifth most among qualifying hitters.

DETROIT (AP)  Starling Marte dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning of Pittsburgh's game against Detroit. Not exactly the norm for the slugging outfielder - but a sign of how much he's struggled early this season.
Later, with the score tied in the 10th, it was time to swing away.
