The Mariners and Astros last met in Houston between August 9-12 -- Seattle came away with a four-game sweep and found themselves four games out of first place in the division. Since then, however, the Astros have gone 21-9 while the Mariners have gone 13-17, dropping Seattle to 12.0 games back.

The Astros have gone 12-2 (.857) in September, outscoring opponents 75-43. Houston's win percentage this month leads MLB, and the team's September ERA (3.01) is the lowest in the American League.

The Mariners have won three of four following a stretch of four losses in five games. At 82-67 (.550), Seattle would be in the second wild card position if they played in the National League -- as it stands, they trail Oakland by 7.5 games for the American League's second spot.

Mitch Haniger has strung together five consecutive multi-hit games, going 10-for-22 (.455) with five runs, four extra-base hits and four RBI in those games. His is the longest active streak in MLB, and is tied for the fifth longest in the American League this season.

Jose Altuve has posted a 1.131 OPS over his past six games, picking up multiple hits in four of the six. Since 2014, Altuve has 292 multi-hit games, most in MLB. Charlie Blackmon (260) is the only other hitter in MLB with at least 250 multi-hit games over that span.

Framber Valdez made his debut on August 21, and has posted a 2.66 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance. His 2.66 mark ranks fifth among AL left-handers since his debut (min. 20 IP). Heading up that list is his opponent today, Wade LeBlanc, who has posted a 1.13 ERA since August 21.

HOUSTON -- With a postseason berth all but guaranteed, Astros manager A.J. Hinch has begun the process of mapping out the number of starts his frontline starters will make over the final two weeks of the season in deference to their workload and potential first-round matchups.
Right-hander Gerrit Cole, the scheduled starter for Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, will instead pitch the opener of the weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. He is 12 2/3 innings shy of his third 200-inning season and has made 30 starts for the third time. His 260 strikeouts are a career high by a wide margin, 58 more than he had in 2015 with Pittsburgh.

Astros tinkering with rotation vs. Mariners

HOUSTON (AP)  If rookie Josh James keeps throwing this way, he might just pitch himself onto Houston's postseason roster.
James struck out seven and scattered four hits over 5 1/3 innings to help the Astros to a 7-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night for his first major league win.
