 In their first series of the season in late April, the Mets won two of the three matchups, outscoring the Padres 19-3 in the victories. San Diego won the middle game 12-2.

 The Padres dropped two of three in Philadelphia over the weekend, and are 1-7 since July 11. Their 81 strikeouts in that span is second-most in baseball, 14 behind the Brewers.

 Eric Hosmer went 5 for 11 with a pair of doubles and three walks in the April series with the Mets, but is hitting just .123 since the start of July. Among 129 batting qualifiers since July 1, Hosmer's .192 slugging percentage ranks 128th and his .338 OPS comes in at dead last.

 Despite a 1.63 ERA in his last 10 starts, Mets ace Jacob deGrom has been saddled with a 1-4 record. He is the first pitcher to throw at least 20 innings over a 10-start stretch and have just one win with a sub-1.65 ERA since Zach Greinke of the Dodgers was 1-2 with a 1.59 ERA from May 11-June 28, 2015.

 Since coming off the DL on June 15, Wimer Flores has reached base safely in 28 of 31 games. He is batting just .266 on the season but his .339 average with nobody on base ranks third in the majors.

 Brandon Nimmo was plunked twice in Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Yankees, giving him five hit by pitches to just four extra-base hits in last 22 games. His .239 slugging percentage since June 24 ranks 142nd out of 145 qualifiers after slugging .618 to rank 16th in baseball from May 28-June 23.

Weather permitting, an ignoble streak will end when the Mets host the Padres in the finale of a three-game series between the bottom two teams in the National League at Citi Field.

NEW YORK (AP)  Corey Oswalt made it worthwhile for all the friends and family members back home in the unusual position of rooting against the San Diego Padres in an early morning baseball game.
Oswalt beat his hometown Padres for his first major league win, pitching three-hit ball over five innings as the New York Mets defeated San Diego 6-4 Wednesday for their first series victory in two months.
