Messi notches 600 appearances in Sevilla win
Decorated Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has picked up yet another accolade.
In Saturday's 2-1 win over Sevilla, the Argentine became the third Barcelona player to make 600 appearances in all competitions, joining Xavi (767) and current Blaugrana brethren Andres Iniesta (643).
Rank | Player | Total | Years |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Xavi | 767 | 1998-2015 |
2 | Andres Iniesta | 643 | 2002- |
3 | Lionel Messi | 600 | 2004- |
4 | Carles Puyol | 593 | 1999-2014 |
5 | Migueli | 549 | 1973-1989 |
The home clash with the Andalusians marked Messi's 393rd league appearance to go with 123 in Europe, 62 in domestic cups, and 22 elsewhere as the 30-year-old celebrates his 14th year of top-flight football.
The next closest active Barcelona player is Spaniard Sergio Busquets. The towering defensive midfielder's 449 appearances are good enough for joint-sixth with winger Carles Rexach, who last sported the Blaugrana strip during the 1981 campaign.
Messi was held off the scoresheet at the Camp Nou, with Paco Alcacer scoring Barcelona's only two goals in the 2-1 victory.
