Footy Power Rankings: Dominant Manchester City takes over top spot

Taking into consideration domestic and continental results, along with underlying stats, we'll try to figure out which clubs are among Europe's elite.

1. Manchester City (1st in Premier League)

Previous rank: 2nd

In what was later described by Pep Guardiola as the best display since he took charge, Manchester City's potent attack - led by Kevin De Bruyne's sensational display - overwhelmed a Stoke City side whose chances of coming away with a point were essentially dashed within the first half hour of Saturday's contest.

2. Paris Saint-Germain (1st in Ligue 1)

Previous rank: 1st

It wasn't the performance Paris Saint-Germain supporters have come to expect from their revamped squad, but Unai Emery's men still managed to snatch three points away from Dijon thanks to an unlikely hero, Thomas Meunier, whose brace masked Neymar's and Kylian Mbappe's struggles in front of goal.

3. Barcelona (1st in La Liga)

Previous rank: 3rd

Barcelona's grip on top spot of the table was loosened, but Ernesto Valverde's men have Luis Suarez to thank for avoiding their first loss of the season on Saturday against Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan cancelled out Saul Niguez's opener with a powerful header to end a brief scoring drought.

4. Real Madrid (3rd in La Liga)

Previous rank: 4th

Real Madrid is - if not keeping pace with Barcelona - at least staying afloat in La Liga. Though Zinedine Zidane's side slipped to third this week behind Valencia, it still beat Getafe 2-1 and remains one of Europe's deadliest clubs. There are issues to address, but Madrid doesn't have to worry just yet.

5. Napoli (1st in Serie A)

Previous rank: 6th

Lorenzo Insigne's strike was all Napoli needed, as Europe's most potent attack took advantage of limited opportunities against Roma to maintain the only perfect record in Europe's top five leagues. With the victory over a title contender on the road, Napoli sustained hope that it's capable of lifting the top-flight trophy for the first time since 1990.

6. Bayern Munich (2nd in Bundesliga)

Previous rank: 7th

The Jupp Heynckes era kicked off similarly to how his previous reign ended, as Bayern Munich cruised to a decisive 5-0 win over Freiburg during the German manager's return to the touchline. The victory also saw Bayern close the gap on top spot due to Borussia Dortmund's first loss of the season.

7. Manchester United (2nd in Premier League)

Previous rank: 5th

Whether pragmatic or cowardly, Manchester United settled for a 0-0 draw with Liverpool this week in a match that Jose Mourinho's side needed more from in order to match Manchester City's stride. This conservative approach away from home isn't helping the Red Devils' cause.

8. Tottenham (3rd in Premier League)

Previous rank: 8th

It wasn't pretty, but at least those associated with Tottenham won't have to field more questions about the team's Wembley Stadium woes - for now, at least. Christian Eriksen's first-half strike proved decisive in a match that lacked much flare against a defensive Bournemouth outfit that came painfully close on two occasions to prolonging Spurs' struggles at their temporary home.

9. Inter Milan (2nd in Serie A)

Previous rank: 13th

Mauro Icardi inspired a 3-2 win over AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina with a hat-trick performance, and while Internazionale fans celebrate moving into second in Serie A, the question this team must now answer is whether it's at its peak, or at the start of something even bigger.

10. Juventus (3rd in Serie A)

Previous rank: 9th

Perhaps the pressure was too much for Paulo Dybala when the 23-year-old's missed penalty cost Juventus a chance to escape with a point during Sunday's 2-1 loss to Lazio. Despite the defeat, Juventus has a chance to rebound next weekend against a struggling Udinese side that's lost four of its last five fixtures.

11. Chelsea (5th in Premier League)

Previous rank: 10th

Chelsea succumbed to a brutal 2-1 loss to last-placed Crystal Palace, but that result alone wasn't enough to remove the Blues from our rankings. Issues of depth and longevity remain ever-present, however, and Antonio Conte will hope to keep injuries at a minimum moving forward. Losing both N'Golo Kante and Alvaro Morata might be a bigger problem than initially expected.

12. Lazio (4th in Serie A)

Previous rank: N/R

As he overtook Dybala in the scoring chart, Ciro Immobile also managed to bring Lazio level with Juventus in the standings after his brace fueled the Biancazzurri to a crucial 2-1 triumph away from home. The win was a continuation of the positive form shown by Simone Inzaghi's side, which has only lost to league leader Napoli this term.

13. Atletico Madrid (4th in La Liga)

Previous rank: 14th

Atletico Madrid did well to take Barcelona to a draw, but this team will feel it deserved better - or, at least, a little more - as a win was on the cards for 82 minutes before Luis Suarez finally found his scoring feet. Still, there were signs of good form and a return to the cohesive style Diego Simeone has worked tirelessly to implement.

14. Borussia Dortmund (1st in Bundesliga)

Previous rank: 11

Borussia Dortmund's rivalry with RB Leipzig ratcheted up a notch as last season's runner-up came away from the Westfalenstadion with a thrilling 3-2 victory. It was the first major blow during an otherwise promising start as Dortmund looks to end Bayern Munich's Bundesliga dominance.

15. Valencia (2nd in La Liga)

Previous rank: N/R

Valencia is back. Los Che stormed to second in La Liga with a huge 6-3 win over Real Betis, as Rodrigo scored in his fifth consecutive match. It's been a long time since this club has challenged the big three in Spain, but if this form sticks, La Liga's title race might be a little more interesting this season.
