Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is due to appear in court July 31 to testify in a tax case levied against him by prosecutors in Spain, according to reports from the country relayed by ESPN FC's Samuel Marsden.

Spanish prosecutors allege Ronaldo defrauded tax authorities by using shell companies in the Virgin Islands to avoid paying €14.7 million in taxes on income from his image rights between 2011 and 2014.

Ronaldo's camp denied any wrongdoing. His agent Jorge Mendes' firm released a statement, translated by BBC Sport, which read: "It is clear that the football player did not try to evade taxes."

Ronaldo addressed related allegations in December, saying, "He who owes nothing has nothing to fear."

However, he's apparently now keen to leave both Real Madrid and the country entirely due to his frustration with the tax authorities, reports suggested Friday, and has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu in the days that followed the news.

The 32-year-old is currently in Russia on international duty with Portugal for the 2017 Confederations Cup. Should Portugal reach the July 3 final, Ronaldo would still have four weeks to prepare for his testimony.
