Canadian men's national team player Tajon Buchanan joined 2023 Champions League finalists Inter Milan from Belgium's Club Brugge on Thursday for a reported initial €7 million.

The move to Inter is the latest notch in Buchanan's ascendent career. Born in Brampton, Ontario, Buchanan relocated to Colorado at the age of 15 before eventually securing a place on Syracuse's soccer team in 2017. The New England Revolution selected Buchanan with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft and sold him to Club Brugge for a reported $7 million in 2021.

In that time, the 24-year-old evolved into a key player for the Canadian national team. He made 35 appearances, including starts in all three of his country's World Cup games in Qatar.

Usually deployed in the right wing-back position, Buchanan can play further up the pitch. At Inter, though, he'll likely deputize for Dutch international Denzel Dumfries, who occupies the right side of Simone Inzaghi's favored 3-5-2 formation.

Buchanan is a daring dribbler who can take on and burst past defenders with the flick of his foot. He can contribute offensively - as evidenced by his eight-goal output during the 2021 MLS season - but has struggled to find the net in Europe. Buchanan scored just three times in 52 appearances for Club Brugge but assisted on seven goals in that span.

Inter will hope the Canadian can provide sufficient depth as they attempt to win their 20th Serie A title and compete again in the Champions League. The Nerazzurri have been linked with Buchanan for more than a year and reportedly acted when they learned summer signing Juan Cuadrado would miss several more months with a nagging Achilles injury.
