Antonio Conte appears to be leading the race to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager.

The former Inter Milan and Italy coach is open to discussing the possibility of replacing Solskjaer, though he's yet to receive formal contact from United, according to Jamie Jackson and Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian.

Solskjaer's future at Old Trafford is more uncertain than ever following Sunday's humiliating 5-0 defeat to archrivals Liverpool.

Though Conte is understood to be reluctant to take a job mid-season, the 52-year-old would reportedly make an exception to coach Manchester United.

But the Italian manager will be eager to learn more about the club's vision for the future before committing, add Jackson and Romano.

Conte has been out of work since departing Inter Milan last season after winning the Serie A title. He also previously managed Chelsea and Juventus.

News of Conte's interest comes amid reports that several United players have questioned the club's direction under Solskjaer.

Unnamed members of the club lack belief in the Norwegian and consider him "tactically underwhelming" as United seriously consider whether to move on, write Jackson and Romano.

Richard Arnold, Manchester United's managing director, will reportedly meet Monday with club owner Joel Glazer to discuss Solskjaer's future.

Sunday's defeat left seventh-place United with one point from their last four Premier League contests.
