Inter have stepped up their efforts to sign Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The Italian side offered Eriksen a four-year contract after meeting with his agent Martin Schoots in Milan on Friday, according to The Guardian's Fabrizio Romano.

The 27-year-old Dane is free to negotiate with clubs outside of England as he is out of contract this summer.

Inter have not ruled out the possibility of signing him during the January transfer window. The Serie A club is believed to be prepared to submit a bid to Tottenham worth €20 million (£17 million) rather than wait to sign him for free in the summer, Romano adds.

Eriksen, who has also been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to meet with Schoots in the coming days to discuss Inter's offer.

Despite Tottenham's efforts to sign him to a new contract that would make him one of the club's highest-paid players, Eriksen has told manager Jose Mourinho he is ready to leave and embark on a new challenge.

His refusal to commit his future to the club with less than a year remaining on his contract was followed by a report in December which claimed Tottenham are prepared to accept offers worth less than £40 million in January rather than lose Eriksen for nothing when his contract expires.

Uncertainty over Eriksen's future in north London has persisted since last summer and may have contributed to his reduced role following Mourinho's appointment.

Although he's played the full 90 minutes in each of Tottenham's last three matches, Eriksen only managed one start in the previous eight games under Mourinho.

Inter are reportedly attempting to add reinforcements for the second half of the season in their bid to end Juventus' dominance in Serie A. They have been linked with Manchester United captain Ashley Young and are also reportedly interested in signing Chelsea outcasts Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso.

The Nerazzurri sit level on points with Juventus after 18 matches.
