Zlatan Ibrahimovic's potential return to Italy is beginning to look like a real possibility.

AC Milan met with Ibrahimovic's agent, Mino Raiola, on Wednesday to discuss the Swedish forward's stance on a possible return to the San Siro, according to Sky Sport's Fabrizio Romano.

However, it's understood that talks are just beginning and that Ibrahimovic will make his decision in the weeks ahead.

The 38-year-old Ibrahimovic officially announced his departure from the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer earlier this month, although speculation about his future began earlier.

The one constant in that speculation has been reports linking the three-time Serie A Player of the Year with a move back to Italy, where he enjoyed spells at Milan, Inter, and Juventus.

Those reports included suggestions that Ibrahimovic could be intrigued by the idea of joining Napoli or Bologna.

Meanwhile, Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis and Bologna sporting director Walter Sabatini both claimed that signing Ibrahimovic was not out of the realm of possibility.

Milan emerged as a possible candidate after MLS president Don Garber unexpectedly claimed that the Rossoneri were in pursuit of Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic enjoyed his most successful spell in Italy during his three years at Inter, where he won a trio of Serie A titles. After a disappointing stint at Barcelona, he joined Milan and helped capture the team's last top-flight trophy in 2011.

A move to Milan could provide a boost to a club that's fallen on hard times in recent years. Along with their domestic title drought, Milan have not appeared in the Champions League since 2014.

Additionally, Milan have gone through eight managers since Massimiliano Allegri was sacked in 2014.

This season, Stefano Pioli's men sit 14th in Serie A with just 13 points ahead of Saturday's encounter with Napoli.
