Cristiano Ronaldo's mother, Maria Dolores Aveiro, denied reports she was hopeful that her son would return to Manchester United before his sensational transfer away from Real Madrid last week.

Rumours that she'd prefer to see Ronaldo in a United strip again emerged after Real Madrid won the Champions League title for a third successive season. Ronaldo sparked whispers of a return to Old Trafford when he cast doubt over his future in Madrid immediately following Real Madrid's triumph over Liverpool.

He eventually did leave Madrid, but instead of returning to United, Ronaldo went to Juventus in a move that has made his mother "very happy."

"It's a lie that I wanted him to return to Manchester United," Aveiro said, according to ESPN FC's Adriana Garcia. "It's not true.

"I'm very happy with his choice. It's a very happy day for all of us. My son will make Juve even bigger. This is a new adventure and a new life. He enjoyed it at Real Madrid but he needed other challenges."
