One of Napoli's marquee summer signings is set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Promising Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret, who completed a reported €22-million move to the Partenopei only last week, broke his arm in training on Tuesday.

"Alex Meret, during the afternoon training session, suffered a blow to the elbow during a clash of play," reads a club statement. "Ice was immediately applied to the goalkeeper before returning to the locker room.

"Meret underwent subsequent medical tests which showed a fracture of the middle third of the left ulna. The goalkeeper has been immobilised."

Napoli recruited Meret as a long-term successor to Pepe Reina following the Spaniard's move to AC Milan. The 21-year-old earned rave reviews while on loan at SPAL, helping the Ferrara side reach Serie A for the first time in half a century in 2017.

Orestis Karnezis, who arrived from Udinese in a package deal with Meret, is likely to take the No. 1 position for the foreseeable future.
