Washington, March 19, 2021 (AFP) - The United States national team will play Switzerland in a May 30 friendly ahead of key regional showdowns for both squads, US Soccer announced Friday.

The game in St. Gallen is part of Switzerland's preparations for the European Championship, where they will be in Group A along with four-time World Cup champions Italy, Turkey and Wales.

The Americans will be playing their final match before a CONCACAF Nations League semi-final matchup against Honduras in the first week of June, with a possible championship match to follow against Mexico or Costa Rica.

After that comes July's Gold Cup, a North American regional tournament won by the US men six times, and the start of 2022 World Cup qualifying matches in September.

"One of our priorities is to challenge ourselves against top level competition, so we're thrilled to have the opportunity to play a quality European opponent," US coach Gregg Berhalter said.

"Both teams will be gearing up for big tournaments, so it will be great preparation for our group as we head into the summer."
