Watch: Varane clips Alli, sent off after controversial video ref call

Video Assistant Referees (VARs) may not end all the controversy after all.

Called upon to review Raphael Varane's challenge on Dele Alli inside the penalty area, the VAR for Tuesday's friendly between England and France made the decision to send off the Frenchman.

Varane appeared to deny a clear goal-scoring opportunity as he clipped Alli and halted his run. However, the International Football Association Board relaxed rules pertaining to sending-off offences last year, allowing the referees to exercise more discretion in determining the difference between deliberate and accidental contact.

Failing to play the ball inside the area can still result in a red card - which the VAR may have seen in Varane's case - but the play itself might not have been intentional.
