Paris Saint-Germain has emerged as a possible candidate to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

As doubt over Alderweireld's future in north London grows due to unresolved negotiations over a new contract, which is set to expire in 2019, the Ligue 1 leader's interest has grown. According to The Telegraph's Matt Law, PSG is now expected to rival Manchester United and Barcelona and launch a summer bid for the Belgian international.

The central defender has attracted interest in recent months after failing to reach an agreement with Spurs over an improved contract, with a report in January suggesting Alderweireld had rejected an offer from his club.

There's an extension clause included in his current contract that's set to be activated in 2019, which will keep him with Spurs until 2020. However, it's understood that there's a £25-million release clause associated with the activation of an extension, which comes into effect if a potential transfer is conducted two weeks before the summer transfer window closes in 2019.

The release clause, according to Law, could force Tottenham to consider bids for the 29-year-old if interested suitors are willing to launch bids in the region of £40 million.

The report also suggests PSG stands a good chance of convincing Tottenham to sell Alderweireld after developing a positive relationship with the Premier League club following the arrivals of Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura from the French capital.

Manchester United may face the biggest challenge, as Tottenham is reportedly reluctant to strengthen a Premier League rival.
