PSG satisfies Neymar's request with €9M payment to former club Santos

The president of Neymar's first club confirms around €9 million has been received from Paris Saint-Germain, satisfying a request from the forward that Santos benefits from him demanding a world-record fee in the summer.

The payment was also due because of FIFA's solidarity system, according to ESPN FC's Jonathan Johnson. The rule states five percent of all transfer fees are shared with a player's formative club if he leaves a contract before its expiration. Neymar's deal at Barcelona ran until 2021 before his €222-million switch to PSG in August.

It's also understood the number of years a player spent at their formative club determines how much it is due. Neymar was at Santos for 10 years before moving to Spain in 2013, so the Brazilian outfit was due a decent chunk of his world-record sum.

"Yes, they have made the payment," Santos president Modesto Roma Junior confirmed to ESPN Brasil's Diego Garcia, with translation from Johnson. "We have received, I do not know the precise amount, but it is something around these R$ 34 million (€9 million)."

There was a concern that Santos wouldn't receive any of this windfall due to unresolved financial irregularities in his controversial transfer to Barcelona. That deal is still being scrutinised in the Brazilian courts.

Neymar nabbed seven goals and five assists over eight Ligue 1 appearances before he was sent off in a tempestuous Le Classique last Sunday. The forward received rough treatment for much of the match, and was shown a second yellow card after reacting to a tackle from Marseille midfielder Lucas Ocampos.

The 25-year-old is suspended for Friday's meeting with Nice, but should be recalled to the lineup when PSG takes on Anderlecht in Tuesday's Champions League group-stage clashes.
