PSG denies offering Cavani €1M to let Neymar take penalties

Paris Saint-Germain denied reports suggesting that Edinson Cavani was paid off in order to allow Neymar to take penalties.

A report over the weekend claimed that the French side offered Cavani €1 million in hopes of preventing an incident similar to one earlier this month when the two were involved in a dispute over the right to take a pair of set-pieces.

However, PSG reached out to French outlet Le Parisien to reject the report.

A tweet from the news outlet, as translated by ESPN FC's Jonathan Johnson, read: "PSG have formally denied information suggesting Cavani might give up penalties in exchange for the automatic payment of a bonus."

It was reported that Cavani rejected Neymar's attempt to take a penalty during PSG's win over Lyon because it would impede his chances of claiming a €1-million bonus for finishing the season as the top scorer in Ligue 1.

A subsequent report suggested that PSG chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi was willing to pay him the bonus, regardless of his place on the scoring chart, if he ceded penalties to the Brazilian. But Cavani was understood to have rejected the offer.

There wasn't a repeat of the dispute this past weekend as PSG was without the Brazilian, who was ruled out with a minor foot injury, during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Montpellier.

Neymar is expected to be available for Tuesday's Champions League bout with Bayern Munich.
