Alves tells Forlan to 'shut up' after criticism of role in set-piece dispute

After chastising Dani Alves for his apparent role in Paris Saint-Germain's set-piece scandal, former Uruguayan international Diego Forlan was told by the Brazilian to "shut up" and "stop making controversy in my name."

Forlan leapt to the defence of countryman Edinson Cavani following the latter's dispute with Neymar last Sunday over free-kick duties. The ex-Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker also slammed Alves for taking sides in the matter, as the 34-year-old appeared to keep the ball away from Cavani so his fellow Brazilian could take the set piece.

Cavani and Neymar later clashed over a penalty, which Cavani missed. PSG still managed to beat Lyon 2-0.

"There was no sense in Dani Alves going and taking the ball. You can't have a third person going to help one guy so the guy who always takes (free-kicks) doesn't," Forlan told Cadena Cope, courtesy of Agence France-Presse.

"It's childish. But the Brazilians are friends so they look out for themselves."

Alves responded to Forlan with venom.

"I don't know what match you saw but for your information I did not take the ball from any teammate. They took it from me," Alves said on Twitter. "And also, for your information, the last free-kick goal scored by PSG was by me ... so shut up and stop making controversy in my name."

Alves organised a dinner for his PSG teammates on Wednesday to clear the air and make amends, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

Manager Unai Emery confirmed it took place, and although he approved of the outing, he refused to name his primary penalty and free-kick taker moving forward.

"Last year, the penalty taker was Cavani. This year, with the arrival of Neymar, there are two. After that, who is No. 1 and who is No. 2, that is a decision I'll have to take," Emery said.

PSG will try to turn the page with a win Saturday at Montpellier.
