Romain Grosjean crashed on the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix, as his Haas car quickly caught fire after colliding with a barrier and then split in half at turn three.

Grosjean will receive treatment for burns on the back of his hands.

"He's staying in the hospital overnight," Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said on Sky Sports F1, according to Fergal Walsh of Motor Sports Week. "They want to keep him there but he told me he feels good, it seems nothing is broken.

"He's got his hands bandaged from the burns but otherwise, he has no burns (elsewhere) or nothing. He was very upbeat, I would say."

Initial reports indicated Grosjean suffered minor burns on his ankles, too, and possibly a fractured rib.

Out of turn three, Grosjean seemingly attempted to move to the right side of the track but clipped the front of Daniil Kvyat's AlphaTauri. That caused Grosjean to lose control and send his Haas into the barrier.

"Obviously, he's shaken ... I want to thank the rescue crews who are very quick," Haas team principal Steiner said. "The marshals and FIA people, they did a great job. It was scary."

The Bahrain GP was immediately put under a red flag while Grosjean was attended to. The damaged metal barrier was removed and replaced with concrete.

During the red flag, Williams' George Russell tweeted out his relief that Grosjean was OK:

Lewis Hamilton went on to win the race after it restarted, claiming his 11th victory of the year. Grosjean was named Driver of the Day, as voted by fans.
