Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton broke the Formula 1 record for career wins after claiming his 92nd victory Sunday at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao, Portugal.

The six-time F1 champion entered the Portuguese Grand Prix in a tie with the legendary Michael Schumacher for all-time wins.

"I owe this to the (Mercedes team) here and those back at the factory," the 35-year-old Brit said after his record-breaking race. "It's been such a privilege to work with them. I could only (have) ever dreamed of where I am today. It's gonna take some time to sink in. I can't find the words at the moment."

Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas finished second and Red Bull's Max Verstappen placed third.

Hamilton, who won after starting at the pole position Sunday, needed 262 races to register his 92nd victory, while Schumacher collected his 91st win at his 247th start.

Next up for Hamilton is Schumacher's record of seven world championships, which he can match at the end of the 2020 racing season.
