Teenage F3 driver tweets she's 'fine' after fracturing spine in horrific crash

A teenage Formula 3 driver is apparently OK despite suffering a spinal injury in a horrifying crash on Sunday.

Sophia Floersch, 17, lost control of her car during Formula 3's Macau Grand Prix after getting tangled with the car of Jehan Daruvala while driving at a speed of 171.6 mph. The impact launched her vehicle into that of Sho Tsuboi, before hurdling over a barrier and crashing into an area populated by race marshals and photographers.

"First of all it was such a scary moment," Guan Yu Zhou, who drives for the Ferrari junior team and was behind Floersch at the moment of impact, told Marcus Simmons and Jonathan Noble of Motorsport.com. "Sophia was really close to Jehan, so when Jehan braked early she had no time to react. She hit Jehan's right-rear, and that spun her around straight into Lisboa, and she flew into the other car.

"I just hope she's OK."

Floersch sustained a fractured spine as a result of the crash. Amazingly, the race's medical report stated that all of her vital signs were stable despite the severity of her injury, according to Simmons and Noble.

Floersch even managed to tweet out an update on her condition from hospital, stating that she's "fine" and is going to have surgery on Monday.

A race marshal and two photographers were also injured and are now in hospital, per ESPN's Nate Saunders.

Officials stopped the race for a brief period following the crash. Following the restart, it was won by Dan Ticktum of the Red Bull juniors.
