Scary crash at Pocono sends IndyCar driver Wickens to hospital

IndyCar driver Robert Wickens got the worst of a scary crash at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Penn., on Sunday afternoon, but early indications are that the 29-year-old and his fellow racers are going to be fine.
According to ESPN News Services, Wickens was attempting to pass fellow driver Ryan Hunter-Reay on the sixth lap when contact between the two vehicles caused the drivers to lose control. With the momentum causing Hunter-Reay's car to spin into the wall, Wickens' car launched upward off the front of Hunter-Reay's vehicle, spinning and ripping into the catchfence before being thrown violently into the center of the track.
Here's an alternate angle of the wreck:
IndyCar's vice president of communications Curt Cavin told the media that Wickens was "awake and alert," and was being transferred via helicopter from the race site to a local hospital.
Fellow drivers James Hinchcliffe, Takuma Sato, and Pietro Fittipaldi were also caught up in the collision to varying degrees. All three, as well as Hunter-Reay, were cleared to resume driving by the IndyCar medical staff.
After a delay to repair the fence, racing was set to resume at approximately 4:25 p.m. ET, just under two hours after the initial incident.
