Diogo Jota to be honoured with moment's silence at Women's Euro 2025: UEFA

Diogo Jota will be honoured by a moment's silence before Portugal's match against Spain at the Women's Euro 2025 tournament after the Liverpool star was killed in a car crash in Spain, UEFA said on Thursday.

"A moment of silence will be observed at all of today's (Thursday's)and tomorrow's UEFA Women's EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today," UEFA said.

Portugal face Spain in Group B in Switzerland after Italy and Belgium face off in Sion, with the latter match the first to kick off after the tribute to Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese international died at the age of 28 alongside his younger sibling weeks after getting married.

Spain's Civil Guard said a vehicle veered off a motorway and burst into flames shortly after midnight in the municipality of Cernadilla in the northwestern Zamora province.

The Civil Guard said that they believed the crash was caused by a blown out tyre as an overtaking manoeuvre was being performed with his Lamborghini.

Tributes have poured in for Diogo Jota, who helped Liverpool win their 20th English league title last season.

Among those expressing their grief was his Portuguese teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who said that Jota's death "makes no sense".
