Hareide managed his final game at Malmo on Tuesday, in which the Swedish club received an 8-0 Champions League beating from Real Madrid. The 62-year-old had revealed he'd be bidding farewell to Malmo almost one week earlier, when he thanked the club for "two fantastic years."
Denmark has been in search of a manager since Morten Olsen stepped down after the national team's 4-3 defeat on aggregate to Sweden in the Euro 2016 play-offs. Olsen retained the position for over 15 years, during which time Denmark qualified for two World Cups and two European Championships.
In Hareide, Denmark has a manager with knowledge of Danish football, as he previously was at the helm of Brondby.
"I am proud and humbled to be coach of Denmark," Hareide said, according to Reuters.
Denmark's 2018 World Cup qualifying adventure kicks off in September. The national team is in Group E alongside Romania, Poland, Montenegro, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.
