Real Madrid election to be held on June 7

The presidential elections at Real Madrid, which will pit current chairman Florentino Perez against businessman Enrique Riquelme, have been scheduled for next June 7, the La Liga club announced on Tuesday evening.

The vote, validated by the club's electoral board, will take place at Ciudad Real Madrid, the club's complex located in Valdebebas, on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.

The roughly 100,000 Real 'socios' will also be able to cast their ballots by mail.

President of the water and energy group Cox, Riquelme, 37, is the first person to stand for election against construction tycoon Perez since 2004.

Perez, 79, was first elected president in 2000, overseeing the club's Galactico era before resigning in 2006.

He returned in 2009, when he was the only candidate, and was re-elected unopposed in 2013, 2017, 2021 and 2025.

Perez decided to call early elections at the end of a second consecutive season without a major trophy.

Real finished second in the Spanish league and were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by Bayern Munich.
