La Liga gets green light to return in June

Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, confirmed Saturday that La Liga will be allowed to return during the week of June 8.

Although the Spanish top flight has yet to confirm a date to resume the season - which has been suspended since March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic - La Liga president Javier Tebas previously stated he would like to restart the campaign on June 12.

Sanchez gave La Liga the green light during a speech to announce that many COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted.

"Spain has done what it should, and now new horizons are opening for everyone. The time has come to bring back many day-to-day activities. From June 8, La Liga will be back," Sanchez said, according to BBC Sport.

"Spanish football has a huge following, but it will not be the only recreational activity that will return."

It's understood that the Spanish second division will resume around the same time as La Liga.

Tebas said he's "very pleased" with the government's decision.

"But we cannot lower our guard, it is important to follow health regulations and ensure the pandemic doesn't come back," Tebas added.

Spain was one of the world's most heavily affected nations with over 234,000 coronavirus cases 28,000 deaths. But the daily death toll has been on a steady decline, with the country announcing just 56 on Friday.

Spanish clubs returned to training earlier in May, with players only allowed to practice in groups of 10 or less.

The Premier League also intends to resume the 2019-20 season in June, while Germany's Bundesliga returned to action last weekend. It remains unclear when Italy's Serie A will return.

France's Ligue 1 season was canceled in April.
