Manchester United are back in the race to sign Erling Haaland and will rival Real Madrid if the Norwegian sensation leaves Borussia Dortmund, reports ESPN FC's Rob Dawson.

While Dortmund expect to keep Haaland for at least another season, there have been suggestions that Real Madrid could look to trigger the release clause in the 19-year-old's contract this summer, according to Dawson.

United previously showed interest in bringing Haaland to Old Trafford during the January transfer window. But they were reportedly unwilling to meet the demands of the player and his representatives - such as adding a release clause to the contract and a share of the profits from any future sale.

Despite that decision to reject the Premier League side and join Dortmund, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly doesn't hold a grudge against Haaland, who played under him at Norwegian club Molde.

Haaland has scored 12 goals in 11 appearances for Dortmund, making him a target for Solskjaer as he attempts to add attacking reinforcements.

Dortmund's reluctance to part with Haaland is obvious, but they could heighten their efforts to keep him if they lose Jadon Sancho, who's been linked with United, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

At this time, United are believed to be the front-runners to sign Sancho, a €130-million-rated 20-year-old. The club has also reportedly expressed interest in signing Matthijs de Ligt if Juventus entertains offers for the defender.
