Now the World Cup is sadly over, theScore assembles the competition's best starting lineup using the top-performing stars in Russia.

The lineup

Goalkeeper

Questionable work between the sticks from Danijel Subasic and Hugo Lloris in the final grants Jordan Pickford a spot in the XI. Not only was the Everton goalkeeper instrumental in England finally winning a penalty shootout at the World Cup, he also pulled off miraculous saves, including a few against Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Notable mention: Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)

Defence

World Cup winner Raphael Varane is an obvious choice in the middle of defence, and is partnered by John Stones, who displayed nascent leadership skills and excellent composure with the ball in England's back-three. Belgium's Thomas Meunier edges Kieran Trippier on the right-hand side, and Lucas Hernandez is relatively untroubled in nailing down a left-back berth.

Notable mentions: Kieran Trippier (England), Domagoj Vida (Croatia)

Midfield

The midfield picks itself. N'Golo Kante forms the base of an all-action trio fronted by Golden Ball winner Luka Modric and Paul Pogba. Modric deservedly captured the award after he was simultaneously an indefatigable and composed figure in the middle for Croatia.

Notable mentions: Philippe Coutinho (Brazil), Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)

Attack

Although he didn't pick up the top individual gong, the tournament's best youngster, France's Kylian Mbappe, is the standout star from Russia. He starts on the right of a triumvirate rounded off by the intelligence of Antoine Griezmann and the speed and industry of Croatia's Ivan Perisic.

Notable mentions: Eden Hazard (Belgium), Mario Mandzukic (Croatia)
