Dick Advocaat did the job he was brought in to do. And now he's off.
Sunderland, who hired the 67-year-old in March to replace Gus Poyet – when they were mired in a relegation battle – announced Wednesday that Advocaat has made the decision not to continue in the role after guiding the Black Cats to safety.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short had this to say of the Dutchman's decision: "Although I am extremely disappointed, I understand and absolutely respect his decision. In his brief time here he made a real impact and lifted the club with his experience and enthusiasm. We will always be grateful to him for what he achieved."
