Luke Shaw's ignorance signalled the end to Frank Lampard's international career

If Arsenal fans needed more ammunition to dislike Manchester United and one of its players, Luke Shaw provided them with some extra motivation after his lack of knowledge regarding one of the club's top defenders, Tony Adams.

In fact, Shaw's ignorance was simply too much for Frank Lampard to handle. The veteran midfielder's encounter with the 19-year-old defender - where Shaw admitted he had never heard of Adams - played a part in Lampard's decision to end his international career.

"I was having a chat with Luke Shaw and I mentioned Tony Adams and he didn’t seem to know who I was talking about," Lampard said, per the Daily Mail. "I said: 'Are you winding me up?' And he said: 'Who did he play for?' I knew then then it was time to retire."

Adams is an Arsenal legend after winning four Premier League titles with the North London club, and captaining them from the age of 21. He was also named the English captain and earned 66 caps for his country.

To Shaw's credit though, Adams is old enough to be his dad as he was only seven-years-old when Mr Arsenal ended his career in 2002, but it's relatively shocking that an English defender is unaware of one of his legendary counterparts.

Wonder if he's heard of Bobby Moore?
