Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta didn't shy away from reports that the club is keen on Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen but said no formal approach has been made.

"Often important players are linked to us. Eriksen is an excellent player whose contract expires in June and we have had no contact with Tottenham," Marotta said, according to the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick. "I still believe that there are many teams interested in him and we have not started any kind of negotiations."

Spurs risk losing the 27-year-old Danish international for nothing in the summer, prompting reports that the club will field an offer of £20 million. In June, Eriksen admitted that he'd like to "try something new" amid ongoing discussions with Spurs about a new deal. Those talks have since gone cold.

Eriksen has made 24 appearances for Tottenham this season, playing the full 90 minutes in each of the club's last three matches despite starting just one of the previous eight in all competitions under new manager Jose Mourinho.

For Marotta, the playmaking free-kick savant fits the profile of the player Scudetto chasers Inter are pursuing in the January window.

"I simply say that he is an important and interesting player. We are looking for a midfielder and a winger," Marotta added. "We are having several contacts with companies and agents to try to improve this group."

Inter sit joint-top of Serie A following Monday's 3-1 win at Napoli, though repeated injuries for summer signing Stefano Sensi have tested the depth of Antonio Conte's midfield.
