Tottenham delay new stadium again, Wembley to host United clash in new year
Tottenham Hotspur confirmed Wednesday they have once again pushed back the opening of their new stadium.
While the club had initially hoped to play in the state-of-the-art facility beginning in the new year, Spurs released a statement confirming their Jan. 13 match against Manchester United will now instead take place at Wembley Stadium, where the club has contested all of its Premier League home matches this season.
Spurs would be next in line to play at home on Jan. 30 when they host Watford in the Premier League. There is a chance they could play in the modern facility before then, as the club is in line to play the fourth round of the FA Cup on the weekend of Jan. 26. That, however, is dependent on them progressing past the winner of Tranmere Rovers and Southport in the third round on Jan. 4.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, meanwhile, refuses to set a date in stone until safety prerequisites are satisfied.
"We are acutely conscious that we are asking fans to go to Wembley for far longer than any of us wanted to," Levy said. "However we are now seeing the progress that we needed to see.
"What I don't want to do is set any firm dates until we have finally achieved a safety certificate. So many people tell me to look at other major schemes that run late and, whilst I know it happens often, we are still hugely frustrated."
