Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has withdrawn from the England squad with an ankle injury ahead of Tuesday's friendly with Italy at Wembley Stadium.

Gomez's club side confirmed the news Sunday with a statement on its official website, adding that the player will "undergo further assessment by the Reds' medical team at Melwood."

Named to Gareth Southgate's starting XI for Thursday's 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Gomez was forced off in the 10th minute for Harry Maguire after picking up a knock.

Initially, Southgate said the Reds' defenders would stay with the Three Lions as they returned home for training in advance of the Azzurri clash, but that prognosis has changed, with Gomez now in the hands of Liverpool's medical staff.

A right-back by trade, Gomez was slotted in on the left side of a back-three alongside John Stones and Kyle Walker. Gomez, 20, has been capped three times by England's senior side after successfully progressing through four rungs of the country's youth setup.

Liverpool's next match is a March 31 visit to Selhurst Park to face a Crystal Palace side that has lost its last two home matches to Tottenham and Manchester United.
