Mourinho denies title race is decided: 'If it is over now, I go on holiday'
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho doesn't believe the Premier League title race has been decided, despite rival Manchester City extending its winning streak to 15 matches Wednesday, telling reporters he ought to be on holidays abroad if the season was truly done and dusted.
The Red Devils defeated Bournemouth 1-0 on Wednesday to keep pace with Pep Guardiola's men, but Mourinho's side remains 11 points behind City at the top of the Premier League table. Still, the Portuguese tactician believes in the prospect of more drama to come.
"I said we play match after match and the next we have to try to win, we have a difficult one at West Brom and we try match after match," Mourinho said, as quoted by BBC Sport. "It is only over in May, if it is over now I go on holiday to Brazil or Los Angeles."
The two Manchester-based sides remain atop the standings after 17 matches, but that gap was widened when City defeated United in their last league tilt. It's a result that led to a bit of drama post-match, but also one that may have played a role in the slim victory over the Cherries in Wednesday's match.
"Fatigue, yes, but hangover - no," Mourinho said, of his team's reaction to the previous derby. "The game was a big one, and a defeat does not help in your recovery - victories help, defeats don't. They were difficult opponents and difficult conditions. If we had scored the second it would have been a calm night for us."
