Manchester United fears Barcelona has taken the inside track in the long and winding pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann, reports The Independent's Miguel Delaney.

Atletico players and United officials both believe Griezmann will soon end up at Barcelona, sources said. United has apparently been told the Catalan side is "very far ahead" in the race to sign the French international.

The Red Devils reportedly came close to a deal in the summer, only for Griezmann to decide to stay in the Spanish capital. He said it would've been a "dirty move" to leave Atletico in the midst of its transfer ban, and agreed to extend his contract until 2022.

Griezmann has struggled to kick on this season, scoring just seven goals across all competitions. Disgruntled supporters also whistled him off the pitch in the goalless draw against Real Madrid.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo is under the impression Griezmann will honour his new contract, recently telling Spanish radio that the player is "at an important club and wants to win things with Atletico."

Griezmann's release clause remains at €100 million, which is almost a bargain in this inflated market.
