The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has made an official request to speak with Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill over the possibility of succeeding Gordon Strachan as the Tartan Army's head coach, according to BBC Sport.

A report surfaced Monday suggesting that the SFA would be willing to double O'Neill's current wages as Scotland looks to replace Strachan, who stepped down from his role in October.

O'Neill is currently under contract through 2020 on a deal reportedly worth £500,000. The 48-year-old former Brechin City and Shamrock Rovers boss has also been the subject of rumours linking him with a move to Rangers, Sunderland, and MLS.

Like Scotland, O'Neill's charges missed out on a place in Russia for the 2018 World Cup, but for Northern Ireland it came as a result of a narrow play-off defeat to Switzerland buoyed by a defensively adroit approach that has further boosted its manager's profile.
