Scotland rescues late result with fortuitous Slovakia own goal
It's better late than never for Scotland, but all goals count the same.
Scotland defeated 10-man Slovakia on Thursday by way of a fortuitous 89th-minute Martin Skrtel own goal, a deserved end to a match that featured a flurry of Scottish chances in the second half, including a pair of shots off the crossbar.
Ikechi Anya provided a cross into the box after Leigh Griffiths managed to bumble the ball into an open channel, and the resulting cross met the feet of a tangled Skrtel and striker Chris Martin. While it was Skrtel who touched the ball last, the goal was a mad scramble that ultimately gave Scotland a late winner.
It won't matter how Scotland earned all three points ... only that the team did. With the win, Scotland leapfrogs over Slovakia into second in Group F, while a last-gasp goal by England striker Harry Kane against Slovenia also keeps Gordon Strachan's side in that play-off spot all by themselves.
