Manchester United's seldom-used left-back Luke Shaw is set to stay at Old Trafford until 2019 after the club exercised an option to extend his contract, sources close to the player told ESPN FC's Peter O'Rourke.

Several of his teammates have also been linked with signing longer terms in Stretford, including Marouane Fellaini and David De Gea.

The Shaw news may surprise some United fans given the doubts shown by manager Jose Mourinho regarding the Southampton product's professionalism, and his continued fitness issues. Shaw's only appeared as a substitute in the League Cup against Burton Albion this season after undergoing ankle surgery in the summer.

He initially joined United in 2014 for around £30 million, signing a four-year contract. His first serious setback while on the Red Devils' books was a double leg fracture suffered in a Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven in September 2015.

His efforts to regain fitness and earn his manager's trust meant he was restricted to just 11 league appearances in the 2016-17 term. He'll hope to play much more in the current campaign in order to catch the eye of national team boss Gareth Southgate.

England is expected to book its ticket to the 2018 World Cup in Russia during October's qualifiers, but Shaw appears to be behind Ryan Bertrand, Aaron Cresswell, and Danny Rose in the left-back pecking order, although the latter is suffering from his own long-term fitness issues. Kieran Gibbs is also seeking to boost his England credentials via more first-team appearances since joining West Bromwich Albion from Arsenal in the summer.
