Jermain Defoe is apparently set to return to the club he briefly represented as a promising teenager.

The striker, 34, has agreed to move for free to Bournemouth, sources tell Sky Sports News HQ, leaving Sunderland after its bottom-placed finish in the 2016-17 Premier League season.

A deal is "moving quickly," reports BBC Sport, but an official announcement of the transfer isn't expected Tuesday.

Reports circulated earlier in May that Cherries manager Eddie Howe had identified Defoe and outgoing Chelsea captain John Terry as ideal players to add experience to his squad, and the former could present a major coup after he scored 52 percent of Sunderland's goals during its descent.

Bournemouth's top scorer was Joshua King with 16 tallies, but the next in line is Junior Stanislas, who registered just seven. Howe knows Defoe firsthand too, from when the pair played together for the south coast outfit in the third tier during the 2000-01 campaign.

Defoe was also linked with a homecoming to his first club, West Ham United.

The 56-time England international was allowed to leave Sunderland for nothing due to an escape clause in his contract activated in the event the Wearside lot was relegated. He could demand around £100,000 a week in wages, however, which is larger than any pay packet dished out in Bournemouth history.
