Conte: Chelsea 'a great team on paper, not on the pitch'

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had plenty to say about his team's poor showing Saturday, as the Blues fell to a thorough 3-0 loss at the hands of London rival Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Outplayed and outmatched across the field, Conte's Chelsea team failed to register a goal and conceded three in embarrassing fashion, exemplified when Gary Cahill turned the ball over in possession for the Gunners' second goal.

It all left Conte puzzled.

"What happened? I think from the first minute we didn't have the right attitude," Conte told BT Sport, as quoted by ESPN FC. "I think we played a bad game against a tough team, very organised, very prepared in the tactical physical aspect.

"I think that after today we are thinking that we must work a lot, because now we are a great team only on paper."

Chelsea's dogged back four failed to mark an onrushing Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil for Arsenal's third goal, after being utterly exposed by the Gunners' smart interplay when Theo Walcott buried the team's second of the night.

But Conte isn't pinning blame on any one player.

"I don't want to talk about the mistakes because it's not right for the player," Conte said. "We win as a team, we lose as a team. We know we must work a lot and if someone thinks this team now is ready to fight, I think we must wait and work to improve a lot and to come back a great team not only on paper, but on the pitch."
