There will be a new playoff format at the 2019 Open Championship if extra holes are needed to determine the winner.

A three-hole aggregate playoff followed by sudden death will be used for the first time in Open history, the tournament announced Friday. A four-hole aggregate format has been in place since 1989.

Playoffs were needed in 21 previous Open Championships, with Zach Johnson's victory at St. Andrew's Old Course in 2015 being the last. He defeated Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen.

Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush will host the 2019 Open Championship beginning on July 18.
