Steve Stricker was named the captain for the 2020 American Ryder Cup team on Wednesday.

Stricker will lead Team USA in his home state of Wisconsin when it hosts the Europeans at Whistling Straits next year.

The 51-year-old Stricker brings plenty of experience, having served as vice-captain in each of the past three Ryder Cups and captained the 2017 Presidents Cup team. He also represented the USA in three Ryder Cups as a player.

Stricker becomes the first American captain who's never won a major championship in their playing career.

The Americans will look to reclaim the Ryder Cup after an embarrassing 17.5-10.5 defeat in Paris last September.

All four captain's picks will be made on Sept. 1, 2020, according to Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner. Previously, captains selected three players before waiting a week to make the fourth selection.

Padraig Harrington was named Europe's captain in early January.
