The hiring of Frank Lampard as Chelsea's next manager is inevitable, sources close to the club told The Telegraph's Matt Law.

Chelsea are reportedly poised to pay £4 million in compensation to get Lampard out of his contract with Championship side Derby County.

The 40-year-old former midfielder nearly led Derby back to the Premier League in his first managerial stint, falling just short in the playoff final against Aston Villa.

Sources told Law that the majority of Chelsea's players are looking forward to the prospect of working with Lampard, who became the club's all-time leading scorer during a 13-year run in west London.

That enthusiasm is understood to be particularly important to owner Roman Abramovich following Maurizio Sarri's divisive tenure at Chelsea, especially as the side faces a transfer ban and life without Eden Hazard.
