Southampton missed out on the chance to go second in the Championship when they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at home against rival promotion-challengers Hull City.

Anass Zaroury put the visitors in front in the 11th minute and Jaden Philogene then slipped in Fabio Carvalho to make it 2-0 after 36 minutes as Southampton were caught trying to play out from the back.

Substitute Joe Aribo pulled one back late on but Hull held on for the win to move back into the play-off places.

Southampton's defeat opened the door for Ipswich to climb above them into third as they struck late to beat bottom side Rotherham in a seven-goal thriller at Portman Road.

Tom Eaves fired the visitors in front within two minutes but Ipswich quickly equalised through Wes Burns and looked on course for a comfortable win thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Burns again.

Hakeem Odoffin pulled one back on the hour mark and Rotherham equalised in brilliant style in stoppage time courtesy of a 'panenka' penalty from Cafu, only for Omari Hutchinson to snatch the winner seconds later in the fourth minute of added time.

Ipswich move to 69 points, level with second-placed Leeds but nine points behind leaders Leicester.

West Brom remain a point above Hull in fifth following a 3-0 win at Plymouth with second half goals from Cedric Kipre, Mikey Johnston and Tom Fellows who completed the scoring in stoppage time.

Cardiff and Blackburn played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.
