Manchester United's failure to strike a deal with Ajax for forward Antony could pave the way for the struggling Premier League club to pursue another young Eredivisie star.

The Red Devils are expected to shift their focus to PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo after Ajax turned down their €80-million offer for Antony on Wednesday, according to David Ornstein and Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.

Gakpo is viewed as a more probable option for United, as club officials were dismayed over the chances of sealing a deal for Antony after their revived effort to sign the Brazilian was knocked back.

Earlier this year, Gakpo agreed to an extension until 2026 with PSV. But he reportedly signed with the belief that the Dutch side would help facilitate a transfer if any substantial offers were made for the 23-year-old this summer, according to Ornstein.

The Dutch international had 12 goals and 13 assists in 27 Eredivisie appearances last season.

United, meanwhile, are also in the process of attempting to strengthen their midfield after opening their Premier League campaign with two disappointing losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. Reports suggest they are on the verge of agreeing to a deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid.
