FA looking into suspicious betting patterns involving Arsenal player

The Football Association is investigating a yellow card shown to an Arsenal player due to suspicious betting patterns in a Premier League match this season, according to Joey D'Urso and James McNicholas of The Athletic.

Bookmakers reportedly contacted the FA to notify the English governing body about an abnormal amount of money being placed on the potential for that player to receive a yellow card during that fixture.

"The FA is aware of the matter in question and is looking into it," an FA spokesperson told The Athletic.

The identity of the Arsenal player is known but isn't being reported by The Athletic, and the date of the match in question is unknown.

The incident involves a form of betting known as a proposition bet or spot betting, which allows people to wager on specific events in a game rather than traditional bets, such as the final outcome of any given match.

While it's unclear what kind of punishment the player involved faces if he's found guilty, recent betting breaches resulted in lengthy suspensions.

Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban in 2019 after breaching betting rules. He was found guilty of notifying his brother to place a wager on his potential transfer to Spanish side Sevilla and fined £150,000.

Newcastle United full-back Kieran Trippier was also punished by the FA for breaking betting regulations. He was suspended 10 weeks and fined £70,000 in 2020 after telling friends to place bets on his imminent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid in 2019.
