Cavani extends contract with Manchester United until 2022

Edinson Cavani is staying put after all.

The Uruguayan forward has agreed to a one-year contract extension and will remain with Manchester United until June 2022, the club announced Monday.

Cavani was set to become a free agent this summer.

"Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents," Cavani said. "I feel a deep bond with my teammates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day, and I know that, together, we can achieve special things."

The veteran striker turned down a two-year offer from Boca Juniors to stay in England, reports Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian.

Cavani has become a vital contributor for the Red Devils down the stretch. Although injuries and rumors about his future threatened to disrupt his campaign, the 34-year-old has racked up eight goals in his last seven matches across all competitions, including four in the Europa League semifinals.

After early suggestions that he was unhappy in Manchester, Cavani has shown the predatory scoring instincts manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long been looking for from his crop of attackers; the Norwegian was keen to keep him at the club going into next season.

"I said when Edinson signed that he would bring energy, power, and leadership to this group, and I haven't been proved wrong, he has been everything I thought he would be and more," Solskjaer noted.

Overall, Cavani's found the net 15 times this season, offering a focal point up front that nicely complements the rest of United's squad.
