Burnley dealt Liverpool their first home defeat in the Premier League since April 2017, ending the champions' unbeaten run at 68 matches with a 1-0 result on Thursday.

Ashley Barnes' penalty in the 83rd minute proved decisive, and goalkeeper Nick Pope's six saves held Liverpool off the scoresheet for a fourth consecutive Premier League match.

Liverpool are now six points behind first-placed Manchester United at the halfway point of the season. Burnley, meanwhile, move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Without a win at Anfield since 1974, Burnley seemed the least likely to end Liverpool's streak. Thursday's result means Chelsea, who went 86 matches without defeat from March 2004 to October 2008, will continue to hold the record for the Premier League's longest-ever home unbeaten run.

It also amplifies the pressure on manager Jurgen Klopp, who's struggled to find a solution to his team's scoring woes. Liverpool have gone 438 minutes without a Premier League goal and have taken just three points from their last five league fixtures.

Klopp dropped Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah to the bench but eventually called upon the pair as the game wore on. Captain Jordan Henderson missed out with a "minor" problem.

Divock Origi, who started ahead of Firmino, threatened just before the halftime interval with a shot that hit the upper post. Another chance fell to Salah in the 59th minute, but Pope produced a fantastic reaction save to keep the score level.

The Reds fell behind when Barnes drew contact from Alisson in the penalty area. The Brazilian goalkeeper caught Barnes as he rushed out to block his shot, a blow that could cost Liverpool in the title race.
