Everton defender Lucas Digne is set for surgery after suffering an ankle ligament injury during training this week, the Premier League club announced Thursday.

"Digne is due to undergo surgery on Monday before commencing his rehabilitation under the care of the club's medical staff," Everton said.

While there is no timeframe for his return, there are fears that the injury could keep the 27-year-old out for a significant period.

The left-back has been a standout performer for an Everton side that kicked off the campaign with four straight wins. The Toffees sit sixth in the table with 16 points after nine games.

Niels Nkounkou filled in at left-back in Everton's loss to Newcastle United on Nov. 1 while Digne served a suspension.
