Fabinho's hamstring injury adds to Liverpool's defensive woes
The hits keep coming for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp confirmed that versatile Brazilian Fabinho suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday's Champions League victory over FC Midtjylland, an ailment that further weakens an already depleted backline.
The midfielder has been filling in at center-back in the wake of Virgil van Dijk's knee injury and limped off after 30 minutes of the Reds' 2-0 win at Anfield.
After the contest, the German bench boss said the injury was "exactly the last thing we needed."
"He felt his hamstring, so that's not good," Klopp told BT Sport, via Agence France-Presse. "He didn't feel it that much - he said he could've played on - but not sprinting, so that doesn't help. We will see, we will have to do a scan and see, but clearly, it's not good."
The severity of the injury is expected to be revealed Wednesday.
Rhys Williams, 19, replaced Fabinho and could be set for another appearance in the Premier League this weekend with Joel Matip still nursing an undisclosed issue sustained during the recent Merseyside derby.
"The players who are now injured, we cannot use them on the first day of being fit again - or not injured anymore. They need a proper build-up for the rest of the season, and that's what we try," Klopp added.
